About NYU Law
Founded in 1835, the NYU School of Law is the oldest law school in New York City. It is one of the most selective and prestigious law schools in the country, and is particularly well-regarded for its international law and tax law programs.
Often in practice lawyers need familiarity with subject matter outside the purview of traditional law school curriculum. Subjects like finance, accounting, business entities, statistics and more are central to the practice of law even though they aren’t subjects students will encounter in law school. NYU Law therefore decided to offer a series of online courses for first year law students that would “fill in the gaps” between what they learned as undergraduates and what they would need to know to be successful in law school and beyond. The school needed a solution that was branded, integrated with its existing online infrastructure and — most essentially — genuinely useful to its students.
Prior to working for NYU Law, IBL deployed an independent platform for NYU’s School of Professional Studies alongside its Director of Global Technology Innovation, Dr. Peter Morales. So when NYU Law needed a partner who could support the day-to-day operations of its lead instructional designers, IBL was a natural choice. As one of edX’s first official referral partners, IBL has developed over 25 production-grade Open edX instances for clients and that experience gave NYU Law the confidence that IBL had the necessary skills to deploy its high customized learning initiative. As James Bryan Smith, an instructional designer for NYU Law, recalled, “While designing a supplemental course for incoming law students, we encountered some limitations working on existing platforms. After speaking with several consulting firms, we partnered with IBL Studios to develop a customized, branded solution. Collaborating with IBL Studios has proven successful beyond our expectations.”
