About the US Air Force
The United States Air Force is the aerial warfare branch of the United States military. Between active personnel, reserve personnel, civil personnel and air guard personnel, the Air Force has 700,000 members. Its annual budget is $140 billion.
For almost 70 years the Air Force’s Air University (AU) has conducted professional military education, graduate education and continuing professional education for officers, enlisted men and civilians throughout their careers. As part of its mission to provide training and education services to every Air Force member, Air University was interested in the potential of online learning to significantly expand its reach and accessibility. Of course, with 700,000 members the Air Force would need a highly scalable platform. The platform would also need to be branded and integrated with the Air Force’s existing online infrastructure.
In IBL the Air Force found a partner with the technical know-how to deploy the branded, highly scalable solution it was looking for. In fact, by distributing the deployment of the Air Force’s Open edX instance across several servers, IBL ensured that the platform could support a user base even larger than the Air Force’s 700,000 members. To increase course accessibility IBL built iOS and Android apps for the platform and also engineered a single sign-on system so that users already signed into other Air Force web services would not need to sign in again. And by incorporating Insights Analytics into the platform IBL gave course instructors increased optics into learner demographics, performance and behavior. In fact, IBL’s software deployment services were so successful that the Air Force later engaged its instructional design services as well to assist in the development of more effective course structures and course materials.
